O’s Notes: Portland based saxophonist Rich Halley leads a quartet with Clyde Reed (b), Carson Halley (d) and guest artist Bobby Bradford (cornet, perc). This recording documents their live performance at the Penofin Jazz Festival ~2 hours north of San Francisco in May 2008. They play modern free jazz, four songs with Halley experimenting to the fullest extent. Bradford does an excellent job stabilizing the performance with warm tone and complementary melodies. Halley’s sax is gutsy an at times brash. He is aggressive and in your face but controlled with tons of emotion. The music is all original and deep in the zone of free jazz aficionados.
