O’s Notes: Saxophonist Mark Turner assembles a quartet to record Live at the Village Vanguard with David Virelles (p), Ben Street (b), and Paul Motian (d). It’s the first release with Mark leading in about a decade. He’s been busy as one of the first-call saxophonists on the New York Jazz scene. The tones are dark as Turner leans towards the cool bop style, one that excites the audience and rekindles the spirit of masters like Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon. Among the best here are “Bridgetown” with a cool solo by Street, the swinging “Nigeria 2”, and “Wasteland”.
