O’s Notes: Gustavo Cortinas is a drummer, composer and bandleader of a large ensemble on Live In Chicago. “Hanaki” is a springboard for solos starting with Matthew Davis (tb), then Joaquin Garcia (p) while Kitt Lyles (b) and Cortinas anchor the cool blues, adding solos as well before the Drew Hansen (t) and Artie Black (t-sax) close with warm harmony. “LaBalada Del Leon” is a gentle ballad featuring Black. Our favorite is the opener, “Overture” showcasing the entire band. There are ten selections spread across two discs with most songs going for more than ten minutes. They make good use of the time!
