O’s Notes: This is Woody’s third and final volume of live sessions recorded on High Note. It summarizes his contributions to jazz well. There are five songs, each well developed – greater than 10 minutes each to allow full expressive improvisation on solos. Accompanying Shaw’s brilliance on trumpet are pianist Mulgrew Miller, Victor Lewis (b) and Stafford James (d). Steve Turre (tb) also appears with fine complements to Woody. This and the previous two live CDs show an even more expressive side of Shaw, most appreciated!
