O’s Notes: Jazz vocalist Yvette Norwood-Tiger suffered from an inoperable brain tumor in 2012. Although doctors gave her little chance of survival, she persisted and has thrived on stage ever since, serving as an inspiration for all who have seemingly insurmountable challenges. There is solid instrumentation on Love Is with strong solos by Ken Burkhart (p), Michael Mackey (t), Joshua Ewers (b) and Jose Roman Duque (d), all complimenting Norwood-Tiger’s vocals. The program stretches from pop ballads like “Time Is A Wrecking Ball” to a taste of samba on “Agua De Beber” but it’s mostly jazz standards with a couple of originals. The music grows on us with an inspirational, spiritual element that is well-stated on her renditions of “Song For My Father” and “Dear Lord/Psalm 40:1-3”.
