O’s Notes: Argentine drummer, percussionist, composer Juan Megna lived in Brazil for 12 years and became well versed in Afro-Brazilian music as well as getting his bachelor’s degree before moving to the US in 2015. He received his master’s in performance arts from College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati and then a Doctor of Musical Arts from George Mason University in DC where he leads the Latin American Ensemble. Make no mistake, Juan is a strong performing artist as well as an educator! He leads a band with Tedd Baker (sax), Shawn Purcell (g), José Luiz Martins (p, g), and Leonardo Lucini on (b). The music is popping on “Pao”, with a rousing drum solo on “Fara Ogunja”. Other highlights are “Amarenlinha”, “Coisa No” featuring vocalist, and “The Owl Look”. Mariwo is a top-notch Latin jazz recording and Megna’s debut.
