O’s Notes: Fred leads a swinging trio from his seat at the piano. Frank Russo plays drums with Amy Shook on bass. They take a calculated approach on“Matrix“performing fourteen selections including classics from Gershwin, Bach, Brubeck, Hancock, Silver and Evans. Hughes is out front but his accompaniment is always close by supporting home with all of the right accents. Russo does a fine job setting the stage on “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs” with a tepid pace that keeps us on our toes for the bulk of the session! They savor the moment on “B Minor Waltz” and “Asante Cantabile” but the majority of songs are upbeat. Either way it is all good with a sound that sounds larger than three!
