O’s Notes: Professor Tyshawn Sorey skinny’s down his large ensemble to a trio with bassist Matt Brewer and pianist Aaron Diego for Mesmerism, a set of fine modern jazz. Sorey selected six jazz standards and empowered his team to stretch out, without totally disrupting the original themes. The music is suitable as a rich background or compelling enough for a deep listening. “Detour Ahead”, “Enchantment ”, “REM Blues” and “Autumn Leaves” are enticing selections.
