O’s Notes: Guitarist Patrick Butler leads a small band with Dave Williams (t), Austin Nicholson (b) and Jarvis Walters (turntable on “Fiailoa”). They sound much larger with both Butler and Williams adding programmed beats. Patrick wrote all ten tunes that are varied in tempo. “Descender” has a hint of Miles in his progressive fusion years thanks to a simple funky beat and the muted trumpet improvisation from Williams. They stretch the envelope a bit more on “Slimy Snail” and rock to the club beats of “Submariner” before chilling on “Ezflo”. Butler’s brand of music has some runway and he’s shows us both versatility and creativity here.
