O’s Notes: Altered Laws is Miles Black (p, B3, g), Tom Keenlyside (sax, fl, perc), Miles Foxx Hill (b) and Bernie Arai (d). They get support from the Babayaga String Quartet and vocalist Melody Diachum as well. The mood is bright, airy and plentiful over the ten songs on Metaphora. There are elements of bossa nova on “Quando Ela Volta” and “Olinda”. “Isabella” is one of a few tunes featuring Keenlyside’s soothing flute. We also liked “Black Bacon”, and “One O’Clock Slump”. They don’t get stuck with any one jazz style making this a strong contemporary set.
