O’s Notes: Thelonious plays piano with an unorthodox style, one that included many blue notes. He naturally plays blues to accent points and does it with a strong grasp of the mood. The music works particularly well when complimented by brass. Johnny Griffin gets the call on sax with Roy Haynes (d) and Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass. This live session from1958 brings out the best from the quartet, one of Monk’s best recordings.
