O’s Notes: Pete McGuinness takes a leadership role, singing, composing and arranging for his well-regarded Jazz Orchestra. He has not played his trombone the past three years due to embouchure dystonia. Instead he’s expressing himself more with vocals. The band is flush with top talent including Dave Pietro (sax), Mark Patterson (tb), Pete McCann (g), Mike Holober (p), Bill Charlap (p), and warm strings for the finale “Where Do You Start”. Mixed Bag is a sampling of styles from various eras, and it is all jazzy! We enjoyed “Round Midnight”, “The Dark Hours”, “Rebecca”, the suspense of “Down The Rabbit Hole” and the vocal tracks: “So In Love”, From This Moment On”, and “Where Do You Start”.
