O’s Notes: Monk was the master of the ‘off beat’. He placed accents in the most unusual places and did it with such a natural flow that it sounded appealing. It defined his signature. Rudy Van Gelder was the recording engineer for the original Prestige recordings in 1953 and he is the engineer remastering this 2009 CD session. It is as close to the original musicians intent as he remembers. Two quintets are featured. The first four tracks include Frank Foster on tenor sax and drummer Art Blakey. Tracks 5-7 feature Monk with Sonny Rollins (sax) and Percy Heath (b). We preferred the second grouping but both are strong takes of Monk tickling the ivory.
