O’s Notes: This is a dynamic large ensemble led by founder Russ Gershon (sax). He speaks a lot of cooking on the bandstand in the liner notes and they do just that over ten selections. They have been around since 1987 and the music is solid. Gershon wrote six of the selections with two by Joel Yennior (tb) and two from Rick McLaughlin (b) notably “Thirty Five”. “The Petrograd Revision” has funky undertones with layered brass accents. The brass is sharp throughout. “Suriname” takes on a relaxed calypso groove as they expand the mood in yet another direction. There are many directions explored on Mood Music and they all feel good. They wrap up the set with “History Lesson”, a warm selection that left us satisfied and ready for more!
