O’s Notes: Halley makes a sharp but palatable statement on Mountains and Plains. His trio includes Clyde Reed (b) and drummer Dave Storrs who together, maintain the structure of each piece. They are playing free jazz with their interpretation of nature’s space. There feed off of each other and the music flows nicely. Rich provides leadership with melodies on sax that lead them through the journey. Clyde and Dave shine during the passages where the music is broken down into more simple elements. They provide seemingly endless cool syncopated riffs, notably on “Long Valley”.
