O’s Notes: Brazilian pianist Helios Alves leads a trio with Ruben Rogers (b) and Antonio Sanchez (d). Special guests Claudio Roditi (t) and Romero Lubambo (g) join them to present a lively set of Latin music. They open with “Gafeira” where Alves sets a racy tone before handing the lead over to Roditti. The mood changes to playful romance on “Kathy” and vibrancy on “Sombra”. There is a sense of adventure combined with anxiety. Helios shows poise on the relaxing ballads “Black Nile” and “Flor Das Estradas”. It is all bundled with a strong sense of swing. No doubt this is one of the best of the year.
