O’s Notes: This is the first album as a leader for veteran saxophonist Hermann Lara. He has played behind many artists in both contemporary and traditional jazz formats. That experience comes through here as he plays a multitude of different styles. “Song for Nina” is a peaceful Mediterranean ballad. “Second Life Stomp” is a taste of New Orleans jazz and “Voce Deve Samba” goes further south to Brazil! These are just a few of the many cool sounds on New Mission. Guest artist Michael Stern adds fusion guitar on a couple of tracks notably “Holdout”. We also enjoyed “Birk’s Address”.
