O’s Notes: Indian violinist, composer Arun Ramamurthy now resides in Brooklyn and leads a trio with Sameer Gupta (d) and Damon Banks (b) for New Moon, his latest release. Arun was heavily influenced by his grandmother and mother, both Carnatic (southern Indian) vocalists. He has blended that music with western jazz creating his own signature. “Bangalore to Brooklyn”, “Aaji”, “Mirrors”, “Amavasya” and “Sri Valli” are fine pieces marrying both styles in a pleasant groove.
