O’s Notes: Vocalist Sara Serpa and guitarist André Matos lead a quartet with Dov Manski (p) and João Pereira (d). Guest artists Sofia Jernberg (voice), Okkyung Lee (cello) and Lourenço (voice) join for 2-3 selections each. The music has lots of airy vocalizations by Serpa in front of sometimes eerie musical backgrounds. Night Birds projects a sense of desperation, misery, and sadness. It was recorded coming out of the pandemic in November/December 2022. “Family” is among the best.
