O’s Notes: Natalie Fernandez is a stunning vocalist, songwriter and performer who has starred in supporting and lead roles. Her 2013 recording Nuestro Tango celebrates her heritage with a modern, jazzy American twist. Musical Director Zaccai’s Curtis (p) leads the vibrant band including Luques Curtis (b) and special guest Christian Scott (t). Richard Scofano infuses Argentine tradition with his bandoneon. The Latin rhythms are combined with Afro-Caribbean beats on “Afrotangojazz”. Daniel Antonella (timbales) injects spoken word on “Malena” with sharp trumpet accents from Julie Acosta. Fernandez shines with Scott and Scofano on “Nostalgias”, a heartache ballad. While this release just came across our desk, it is worth seeking out!
