O’s Notes: On the Crosswalk is a marriage of contemporary Norwegian jazz and American modern, free jazz. Guttu plays trumpet and assembled a brass-laden band that layers eclectic harmonies throughout the set. Pianist Renato Diz plays counter melodies while the rest of the rhythm section provides a solid foundation. They start out in the experimental mode but “Love Carry Me” and “Meander” bring order to the session, a sense that continues with most of the ballads. We also enjoyed “Plan B” with great work on the cymbals by drummer Mareike Wiening. The creative approach is laudable and we hope to hear more from Yngvil.
