O’s Notes: This is chamber music led by Manchon. Well, maybe not totally chamber music but a blend of jazz and classical music led by French violinist Olivier Manchon. “Breakfast Queen” was littered with sounds that we could only fully appreciate in our studio. (Manchon’s hand movements on the strings sounded too much like the sound of turn signals when we listened in our car – but were transformed in the sweet spot in our home studio!) The squawking bass clarinet of John Ellis on “Just A Second” added a lot of depth and true jazz improvisation. Most of these songs reminded us of the soundtrack for a mystery or suspense film. Oblique suggests listening early morning or late night to capture all of the nuances. We suggest taking your time to truly appreciate this work as they cut across the grain.
