O’s Notes: Ambrose Akinmusire is a jazz trumpeter who has performed a lot in free jazz space. Owl Song is his Nonesuch debut, tilted more towards a mellow, jazz-fusion. His band is a trio with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Herlin Riley. The music is full of rich tones that blend well together, suggesting relaxation and peace. Frisell’s guitar, Riley’s cymbals, and gentle pats are a textured canvass for Akinmusire’s melodies. We enjoyed all of the eight selections, a refreshing, rejuvenating elixir for the ears and the soul!
