O’s Notes: Composer, pianist Michael Pagán leads a post-bop ensemble for his latest release Paganova. Michael Herrera and David Chael are the front-line saxophonists anchored by bassist Louie Pagán, drummer Ray DiMarchi with Michael on the keys. Pagán’s compositions are fresh, upbeat, and energizing like “Burn it Forward” and “Napoli”, complemented by a few covers by his cherished influencers, notably Steve Swallow’s “Eiderdown”, and the relaxed “Where Do We Go From Here” penned by Kenny Wheeler.
