O’s Notes: Pentas is the seventh collaborative recording of the renowned Japanese free jazz duo, pianist Satoko Fujii and trumpeter Natsuki Tamura. They recorded this session in Krakow, Poland and followed up with a concert in New York arranged by Eric Stern and his wife Chris. Sadly Eric, a longtime fan, passed shortly after the concert. Pentas is dedicated to Eric and Chris Stern. There are eight new compositions, four each from Fujii and Tamura. Fujii’s work is melodic and Tamura latches on to amplify the effect as on “Wind Chili”. It is one of their most approachable recordings highlighted by “Stillness” and “Circle” and undoubtedly leaving Mr. Stern in a good place.
