O’s Notes: It seems like too long since we’ve heard from Masekela so we welcomed this CD. We were happy with what we heard, fresh sounds with the polished brass melodies emanating from Hugh’s flugelhorn. It is a relaxing groove where Hugh sings about life and uses the music to help heal the wounds of life’s tough endeavors. Masekela chose Erik Paliani (b, g, keyboards) and Ezra Eramus (p, keyboards) as his key collaborators for the project. They help him bring Phola to reality. It is a strong mix of instrumentals and vocals with his signature.
