O’s Notes: Low woodwind master, arranger Brian Landrus “Plays Ellington & Strayhorn” in a quartet with Dave Stryker (g), Jay Anderson (b), and Billy Hart (d). This album celebrates the great saxophone section of Duke’s orchestra from 1955-1970, specifically baritone saxophonist Harry Carney. The fourteen selections are all classics and the new arrangements sparkle, especially “Daydream”, “Prelude To A Kiss”, “Warm Valley”, and “Lush Life”. The mood is mostly melancholic.
