O’s Notes: Russell takes on seven songs from Miles Davis’ repertoire. He wisely puts his own signature on them as opposed to mimicking Davis. The subtle romance of “Blue In Green” comes off well as does “Footprints” with a funky backbeat. Gunn shares the stage with a formidable team notably pianist Orrin Davis and bassist Mark Kelly. The balance of the quintet is Montez Coleman (d) and Kahill Kwame Bell (percussion). Gunn’s take on “All Blues” was unique again capturing Miles’ spirit with a different approach. They wrap the set with Gunn’s own “New New Blues” where everyone gets a turn to shine.
