O’s Notes: Alto sax master Lee Konitz makes a trip to Portugal to record with the Orquestra de Matosinhos. Ohad Talmor is the conductor, arranger and musical director. He and Konitz compose the music for the program that consists of twelve songs with dark tones. The first half of the disc is more open with a rather free structure in many places. The peaceful excerpts featuring Lee with a few other musicians on “September 11th” is a bright spot. The Rhythm Sweet is a swinging group of songs (tracks 7-11) that are more easily embraced. We preferred the latter.
