O’s Notes: Samara Joy has the most soulful voice on today’s jazz scene. Yes, that’s a strong statement but justified! Her voice is deep, rich and full of emotion. She demonstrates her prowess on the operatic “Reincarnation Of A Lovebird”, among several others. The band swings in the background including energetic horns and a tight rhythm section. We enjoyed “Peace Of Mind / Dreams Come True”, “Autumn Nocturne”, and a Latin-infused rendition of “No More Blues”. Portrait is a fine set in Samara’s growing collection of albums. Stay tuned!
