O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist Peter Hess leads a quartet with drummer Tomas Fujiwara, trombonist Brian Drye and Adam Hopkins on bass. There are seven selections with a heavy dose of improvisation. Hess is out there but not too far gone, reminding us of Sonny Rollins on “Ring Tone”! They also play a couple of ballads notably “The Net Menders” featuring Hopkins. “Echolocation” has a cool horn intro that evolves into a funky exchange. The band gets charged up again on “Komma”, our favorite of the bunch, rounding out a good session.
