O’s Notes: This is an intriguing combination of styles. It is the music of Merle Haggard, a musician influenced by Johnny Cash and Ornette Coleman, quite different musical approaches. So we hear warm jazz with strong Country & Western overtones on “Miss The Mississippi And You”. This is in stark contrast with “Working Man Blues” which starts out as a simple blues tune before breaking into gutsy avant-garde. Bryan Murry (tenor sax), Jon Irabagon (alto sax), Jon Lundbom (g), Moopa Elliott (b) and Danny Fischer (d) bring the music to life. We preferred “Lonesome Fugitive”, a lazy blues tune and “All of Me Belongs to You” with a fine bass solo and scat by Elliott.
