O’s Notes: John Vanore is a polished trumpeter, educator, composer and producer. He recently discovered tapes of a duo performance with keyboardist Ron Thomas made in 1984 and1985. It’s a spontaneous set focusing on classic tunes and their impromptu takes. There is some overdubbing of cymbals and the DX-7 but otherwise it’s all fresh first-take music. The rich sounds of John’s trumpet and flugelhorn are the highlights of Primary Colors, mostly ballads. “Final Dawn” and “A Time For Love” are among the best.
