O’s Notes: Chinese tenor saxophonist, composer Kevin Sun leads two distinct Quartets on his latest 2-disc release. Sun composed 15 of the 19 selections a mix of mostly free jazz with some modern jazz and ballads sprinkled in. Side One features Sun with Dana Saul (p), Walter Stinson (b) and Matt Honor (d). “Shadows Over The Sea”, “Melpomene” and the swinging “Storied History” are notable here. Side Two swaps Christian Li (p) and Kayvon Gordon (d) into the quartet. “Homage Kondo”, covers of “On The Street Where You Love” & “Yellow Magic”, and “Pixelate” stand out here.
