O’s Notes: Trombonist Chris Washburne brings us a ragtime revival of sorts on Rags And Roots. The music is sultry with blues, Caribbean, and ragtime vibes combined to capture an early 1900s club/show feel. There is a generous dose of vocals primarily from Sarah Elizabeth Charles and including Gabriela Anders on “St Louis Blues/The Peanut Vendor”. The entire band props up the background vocals on “Ala Cote Gen Fanm”. We also enjoyed “Odeon” and “Creole Belles”. This modernization of a traditional genre is executed to perfection giving listeners a taste of the past in contemporary lights.
