O’s Notes: New York-based trombonist Conrad Herwig is in his mid 60s and still cooking with gas! Reflections – Facing South is his latest release, in a trio with the late pianist Eddie Palmieri and first call bassist Luques Curtis. This is a seamless unit that made us forget about the absence of drums. Herwig provides rich, vibrant solos on “Que Viva Barry” and “Cuando Se Habla DeAmor”. Curtis shines on “Augmented Blues”, and Palmieri stands out on “Listen Lady”. While they are excellent individual performers, the beauty is in the combined trio!
