O’s Notes: Rayford Griffin is a contemporary jazz drummer and producer. This is a dedication to the late jazz trumpeter, Rayford’s Uncle Clifford Browne who left us in 1956 at a too young 25. Griffin’s arrangements capture the powerful, sweet sound that Brownie was famous for. A stellar lineup of special guests includes Roy Hargrove (t), Everette Harp (sax), Brian Bromberg (b), the late George Duke (p), Rick Braun (t), Michael Patches Stewart (t) and Nicholas Payton (t). While Browne played hard bop, Griffin’s arrangements have a decided funky bent that usher his Reflections of Brownie into 2015. All six takes are spot on!
