O’s Notes: E.J. is a poet, reflecting on her own groove backed by jazzy rhythms in what has been termed jazzoetry. We call it acid jazz. In some cases rappers are reciting fierce lines with a rhythm that is integrated with the beats. Other cases like Antonio’s find the poet more like a professor, reciting their art over music that reflects the theme. That marriage of words and music is strong here. The inspirations range from civil rights to musicians and music. Accompanying music comes from strong musicians including appearances from Christian McBride (b) and Eddie Allen (t). Highlights are “Bluesman/Truth Be Told” and the title track.
