O’s Notes: Omicil plays soprano sax and leads his band through a program of funky jazz with global influences. There is a catchy groove on “4 My People” that flows into the funky bass line on “Wolé” featuring Lionel Loueke playing guitar. Loueke also plays on “Bee-Bop” with Jowee scatting in the shadows. “Micky’s Groove” has a light calypso beat while “Ayibobo” has more racy Afro hip-hop beats. And then the party starts on “You Know That’s Right” featuring Jeremy Pelt (t). Our favorites are the syncopated “Jn Jn” and the warm “Gospel Medley”. Omicil touches many bases on Roots & Grooves resulting in a collage of music that has something for everyone.
