O’s Notes: Chip Stephens is head of the jazz studies department at University of Illinois. We sometimes forget how fortunate he is to remain on top of his game after a near fatal motor vehicle accident a decade ago. Sadness and Soul is a nice set of peaceful background music, a club set featuring Chip with baritone saxophonist Glenn Wilson, one of the most underrated performers in the business. The two have playing together for many years and at least two as a duo. Highlights are a warm rendition of “‘Round Midnight”, “Giant Steps” and “Countdown”, all unique arrangements that are refreshing.
