O’s Notes: Professor Riggs is a widely acclaimed sax instructor at the University of North Texas. He has also performed with many jazz legends including Ella Fitzgerald and frank Sinatra. He’s assembled this sax quartet with Lee Pulliam (alto), James Ogilvy (tenor), and Terry Steele (baritone). Riggs plays soprano sax and the quartet is called SaxeTexas. As the title suggests, the twelve tunes are all ragtime classics. Very few people pay homage to ragtime these days but SaxeTexas does an excellent job playing new arrangements of Scott Joplin’s works. It’s bouncy and entertaining including the most famous “Maple Leaf Rag”.
