O’s Notes: GR is guitarist Gabriel Riesco, composer, arranger and producer of Sculptures In Time, his interpretation and tribute to Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Chillida’s art is a mastery in contrasts. Riesco attempts the same ideas with his music via dynamics and time. He gets strong support from band members Nir Naamam (sax), Roy Assaf (p), Chris Smith (b) and Colin Stranahan (d). However you see it, we hear a lot of rich syncopated textures in this neobop/fusion set. We liked the pulse on “Ol For” featuring Naaman, and “Simba’s Samba”. It is an enjoyable session with broad appeal.
