O’s Notes: Austrian saxophonist and composer Troy Roberts plays across the jazz spectrum. We last reviewed Nu-Jive 5, a solid contemporary jazz release. Secret Rhythms is more modern jazz but equally good. Maestro Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts (d) anchors a tight rhythm section with Silvano Monasterios tickling the ivory and Chris Smith on bass. Roberts composed 5 of the 8 selections and arranged the three covers to fit his groove, notably “Stella By Starlight” and “Up Jumped Spring”. But check out the new material: “Trick Or Treat”, Eyes Pie” and “Trip” for sure as Roberts continues to impress us.
