O’s Notes: Jim is seeking to create the next level of groove music. His trio includes Jerry Z (B3) and Bill Bickford (g), two guys who have ample experience with funky jazz. Payne wrote, Give the Drummer Some, a book about the history of funk drumming. For Sensei, he’s playing, producing and creating some serious backbeats on ten new songs written by the trio. It’s funky enough to get your head bobbin’ and warrant repeat plays. The groove has funky, cool jazz, beats that continue to be more prevalent and successful on today’s scene. Jim didn’t necessarily create this groove but he’s zeroed in on it!
