O’s Notes: Rodrigo Bonelli is a drummer, composer, arranger, producer and bandleader for Septet Works. Michael Verselli (p), Trevor Brown (b), Carou Johnson (t), Lena Hovanesian (as), Joe Wagner (ts) and Dave Banker (tb) are the rest of the band, a tight ensemble. The program is a good mix of modern jazz, neobop, Latin and ballads. They swing on “Ups And Downs” and cook on “Trial By Fire” but all seven selections have some merit. “A Ballad For Laura” and “Sarla” are the relaxed pieces in a hot but controlled set that is worth checking out.
