O’s Notes: John Lake is a trumpeter, composer and educator. On Seven Angels he leads a fine band including saxophonists Paul Jones and Michael Thomas, pianist Steven Feifke, bassist Marcos Varela, and drummer Jeff Davis. The combined trumpet and saxophone melodies define the mood and spirit of session, a mix of originals and freshly arranged classics. Varela takes a cool stroll on “Ladybird” and Feiffer stands out on “Intro To Pearls” leading to the joyful, swinging mood of “Pearls of the Tartar” and “A Shade of Jade”, our two favorites.
