O’s Notes: Mtukudzi is from Zimbabwe and his music, Tuku music, features the prominent use of lead, rhythm and bass guitars trading notes with spirited backdrop of drums and percussion. It is a fresh and relaxing music that has been used to support a wide range of lyrics – from the struggle for independence to the celebration of freedom. Oliver (g, vocals) has strongly influenced the local music with a plethora of releases. Shanda is a collection that spans his career. There is also a 70 minute video documentary featuring the life of Mtukudzi. While we don’t understand the language, we were able to interpret (by feeling) the lyrics to appreciate the evolution of a fine man, his message and his music in his land.
