O’s Notes: Pianist David Lopato leads an energetic ensemble through 67 minutes of nine Short Stories. Ed Neumeister (tb), Lucas Pino (sax), Michael Sarin – drums, Rogerio Boccato (perc), and Keita Ogawa (perc) round out the band. They touch many jazz genres along the way. “Through The Veil” is a free, chamber jazz, extravaganza with sizzle, and layered harmonies, featuring shadowing vocalizations by Anson Jones. “Clarity” is a refreshing tune featuring bassist Ratzo Harris. The bouncy “Mr Babar”, and the warm Lain “Papagayo” including Bobby Sanabria (perc), are other highlights in a balanced session along with our favorite track, “Prince of Darkness”.
