O’s Notes: This solo effort is very dynamic and creative. Fujii’s work here is very unique. “Tin Can Cat” is a percussive, harmonic song that takes he inside of the piano to extract distinctive sounds extending the range of what we expect from 88 keys. The entire set takes us into new space alternating between bursts of spontaneous free jazz and rhythmic order. It’s tough to classify but it feels good. We liken it to the changing moods and expressions of a lengthy dialogue. There is not a lot of repetition but there are many strong ideas. We think it’s perhaps her best effort to date.
