O’s Notes: Free jazz pianist, Cory Smythe uses electronics and vocals with a large dose of imagination on Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. The session starts with two parts each of “Liquiform” and “Combustion” with an 11-piece band that is up for the explosive improvisation. Solo free jazz piano is the focal point of the 7-part title track that is like a journey through the aftermath of a singed landscape. Smythe packs unusual sounds, squeaks, grunts, and instrumental extractions into the entire set.
